What Is Screen Printing?
Screen printing is a technique in which a mesh is used to transfer dye onto a substrate, with certain area being “blocked off” by a stencil or other impermeable substance. A flooding squeegee is moved across the screen, filling any open apertures in it with ink prior to transferring onto the printing surface. A squeegee then forces the ink through the screen and onto the printing surface. Although one color is printed at a time, multiple screens can be used to achieve a multi-colored image or design.
Screen printing was developed by the Chinese over 3,000 years ago, and was often referred to as silkscreen printing because silk was used as the "screen" prior to the onset of modern industrial polymers. However, they were not using High Tension Frames with emulsion measured in microns and full UV ink curing capabilities like those at B&B Image Group. The high quality and repeatability of this process is ideal for large-volume projects on dimensional substrates.
Various terms are used for this printing process including silkscreen printing, screen printing and serigraph printing – all of which are essentially the same. Various mesh sizes and materials, including nylon, metal and polyester, determine the appearance of the finished design.
Economical and Effective
Screen printing is an economical way to print spot UV clear or colors that will stand up to UV light without fading - up to six years without lamination. Screen printable substrates include plastic corrugated, PETG, acrylic, metal, and all types of plastics and adhesive vinyl with applications ideal for OEM - Original Equipment Manufacturing. Screen printing serves many types of advertising: wide format banners, posters, lawn signs, political signs, real estate and magnetic signs, window decals, equipment decals and bumper stickers are just some of the products that can be screen printed.
